Union Registry
The Union Registry is an electronic database for the administration of emissions allowances. The registry ensures the precise tracking of holdings, issuances, transfers, cancellations and retirements of allowances and Kyoto units. Therefore, the registry enables Austrian companies to perform transactions such as trading allowances and the annual surrendering process.
The verified emissions of installations are also entered into the registry. In this way, it can be verified whether companies hold sufficient allowances in order to cover their emissions.
In June 2012 the registry architecture of the EU Emissions Trading System underwent a fundamental change. The national registries in the EU Member States were replaced by the central, EU-wide Union registry, which is developed and maintained by the European Commission.
In line with the legal provisions, the Austrian part of the Union Registry is managed by Umweltbundesamt GmbH which also serves as a contact point for national and international authorities. Umweltbundesamt GmbH is also responsible for the operational management of the registry and provides account holders with information and support.
