Account closure

To close any type of account or to remove a verifier from the Union Registry we require a duly signed letter of the account holder addressed to the Austrian emissions trading registry requesting the account closure or the removal of the verifier by postal mail or, if an electronic signature is used (in accordance with Annex I or III of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014), as an attachment to an email.

In addition we ask the account representatives of person holding accounts in the Kyoto Protocol Registry, trading accounts, former operator holding accounts and verifiers to request the relevant account closure or the removal of the verifier online in the Union Registry.

Please note that any account can only be closed if the account balance is 0. Is that not the case the account representatives need to take appropriate action (for example transfer to another account).

After the account was closed or the verifier was removed successfully you will receive a letter from the Umweltbundesamt GmbH confirming the contractual relationship has ended.

Particularities for operator holding accounts

To ensure that all relevant legal obligations to close an operator holding account are met we require a copy of the relevant permit of the appropriate authority. We ask you to send this along with the written request for account closure.

We inform you that after receipt of the documentation we are obliged to further clarify details with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology. Operator holding accounts can only be closed after certain legal requirements are met (for example compliance of the last year of verification) and we ask you to allow some time for checking. These checks might also lead to the account closure being postponed to a later stage. The Austrian emissions trading registry will inform you should such a situation arise.

The relevant online-application for the closure of operator holding accounts in the Union Registry will be done by the Austrian emissions trading registry.

Particularities for aircraft operator holding accounts

In the case of aircraft operator holding accounts verification that all legal obligations are met has to be done as well. Only after fulfilling the necessary requirements a closure can be executed. The clarification with the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology may lead to the account closure being postponed to a later stage. The Austrian emissions trading registry will inform you should such a situation arise.

The relevant online-application for the closure of aircraft operator holding accounts in the Union Registry will be done by the Austrian emissions trading registry as well.
